Research before leaving CIDD

I concentrated on two projects investigating interactions between parasites:

Pathogen-mediated competition

Using a combination of mathematical modeling and in vitro experiments, we investigated how competition among strains of Bordetella bronchiseptica — a bacterium that causes respiratory disease in mammals — is mediated by a bacteriophage.

Within-host interactions between subspecies

We developed a mathematical model for the growth and innate immunity-mediated decline of Bordetellae during the early period of infection. The model accurately predicts the growth of B. bronchiseptica for the first three days of infection — during which adaptive immunity is as yet undeveloped. This project is a first step toward a comprehensive model of within-host dynamics.
