Research
While a graduate student at CIDD, I studied how seasonal environmental disturbance influences disease transmission in small mammals, investigating:
- How do parasites affect the host population?
- What role do functional groups play in disease transmission?
- How does periodic disturbance (flooding) affect the contact rates between rodents and what are the knock-on effects for parasite transmission and prevalence?
- What is the role of testosterone in parasite resistance and behaviour of rodents, and how will this impact upon parasite spread and prevalence?
- How can we model disease outbreak in order to prevent their spread?
My research was performed in partnership with Fundação Oswaldo Cruz (Brasil) and EMBRAPA Pantanal (Brasil). We were partly funded by The Earthwatch Institute.
